The Breed Havanese comes from Cuba, as a matter of fact it is Cuba's only native dog breed. The Havanese has the nickname of Havana Silk Dog with an outgoing, funny and intelligent personality.
A Havanese is considered a small breed dog by the American Kennel Club yet they are sturdy with their energy level being somewhat active. They are curious and social dogs. The Havanese enjoys a good romp but has no special exercise needs.
Their name is pronounced the same whether singular or plural. The Havanese are happy dogs with a spring in their step and a gleam in their big brown eyes. A breed hallmark is their curled over tail, as is their gorgeous silky coat which comes in a variety of colors. Some owners leave the coat long, some cut it short and some even cord it like a Puli. No matter how you style their coat they are happy dogs.
Havanese have adaptable natures, an easy way with people and they are thrilled to be any place where they can be the center of attention. They are smart, trainable and just down right natural clowns - in fact some Havanese have worked in circuses. A great trait is that they are also serious watch dogs however, they do not do a lot of yapping.
